This is a little bit old now I know (2 months isn’t that old is it?) but just wanted to share this with you. Reported by CBC and The Guardian, in September Thiery Hinse-Fillion became the first official skateboarding police officer in Canada. The position was created after lots of planning upon his proposal to the Longueuil Police Department.
Hinse-Fillion points out in his interviews with the two news outlets that as a kid he had a lot of run-ins with the police while skateboarding, and so he had the idea as a police officer to try and bridge the gap.
It sounds like the response has been positive so far, and I’m not surprised! It’s a great idea, I know the kids love it when the police are involved in the community in ways besides arrests. Skateboarding is a great sport that so many of us love, but it is also true that we get ourselves into trouble sometimes due to the lack of understanding in the wider community.
I think this is a great step towards building that understanding and helping to keep kids out of trouble with skateboarding!
